Homeless Court

  • Description:

    Assists homeless individuals to clear their court fines for them to apply for other services to help them get off the streets. Through this program, participants will receive credits for community service or time in mental health or substance-abuse programs to pay off their fines at the rate of $10 per hour. Most of the offenses fall into the following categories: traffic, bench warrants and failures to appear, morals offenses such as fare-jumping, illegal camping, possession of shopping cart, possession of open containers, loitering or violating park curfews, and urinating in public.

    Representation services and legal advice provided by San Joaquin County Bar Association staff.

    Coordinates with San Joaquin County's Public Defender, District Attorney's Office, San Joaquin County Bar Association attorneys together with Stockton's City Attorney's Office, the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless, St. Mary's Dining Room and Veterans Administration.

    Program Delivery

    • Eligibility: Must be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

    • Application Process: Walk-in to sign up at any homeless shelter, the Veteran's Office, or the Women's Center

    • Required Documents: Personal letter detailing your situation and the steps you have completed to rectify your personal circumstance and current contact number. Printout of all fines, to include total of all monies owed. Proof of residence from a Homeless Shelter or Substance Abuse Residential Program. Proof of Community Services hours completed. Submission of out-of-county referral.
